The "Best" is rather subjective - I may say one is great, but someone else may say otherwise.

AVC have a summary report on its website http://www.av-comparatives.org/ (- on the top-right) of the AV product which done overall weighted-best in its tests.
Other than that, I strongly advise you try products out before you purchase them to see which you like best. Most have a 30day trial.

I find it surprising nobody mentioned Norton Antivirus 2010. That's still the top-selling antivirus on the planet and the last two releases (2009 and 2010) have been much lighter on system resources, despite what you might hear from other people. No, we're not in 2003 anymore...

Many sites have it available as a free download, including this one:
Norton Antivirus Free Download

More Norton free trials here (Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security):

Good luck!

The first requirement is that the AV run well on your system and is compatible with other programs you use. That is the reason one should always trial the various AVs.

For me if one runs well then the detection rate is the next highest priority. AV Comparatives provides the best and most meaningful tests in my view. There are different type tests, but the on-demand and dynamic tests are the most important ones to me.

As I have examined the results of AVG tests I have concluded that Avira is a top tier AV, and have pretty well settled on it. Others that I consider and will use are Avast, Norton, and F-Secure. My reason for leaving out Kaspersky is that it has not played well on my systems for almost a year, and I have neither the skill nor the patience to try to get it all straight. If KIS ran well on my computer it would probably be the one I would use, and have used for several years until recently.

For free AVs my own choice is Avast as it runs well, and has a very good detection rate.

Other good ones have been mentioned, and trials are the only way to determine the best one for you.

I would not run any without MBAM running in real time. I know of cases where rogues have penetrated top AVs, and it took MBAM to find and remove them.

I am not an expert or even close, but those are my own thoughts.

Regards,
Jerry
