AV-Comparatives Releases Results of Autumn 2024 Speed-Impact Test for Consumer Antivirus Products
AV-Comparatives, a trusted independent testing lab in the cybersecurity industry, is excited to announce the release of its annual Performance Test results for consumer security solutions. The test, conducted in Autumn 2024, evaluated 16 popular anti-malware programs to assess their impact on system speed across various everyday scenarios.
In this year’s Performance Test, we upheld our commitment to thoroughly evaluating antivirus programs for their influence on system performance. The tests were performed on a clean Windows 10 64-Bit system (English), first without any antivirus software installed, and then with each of the consumer security solutions installed using default settings. A live internet connection was maintained to reflect real-world conditions, including the effects of cloud-based features.
The testing environment featured a high-end machine, equipped with an Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and solid-state drives (SSDs). This allowed us to accurately assess the performance impact in day-to-day usage. This “high-end” system configuration contrasts with the “low-end” setup used for the April 2024 Performance Test, giving a broader perspective on how different system configurations might be affected by antivirus software.
The Performance Test measured system performance in key areas such as file copying, archiving and unarchiving, installing and launching applications, downloading files, and web browsing. It’s important to note that this test exclusively focuses on speed impact, while protection capabilities are evaluated separately in other test categories like Real-World Protection and Malware Protection Tests.

- Avira Free Security
- Bitdefender Total Security
- ESET HOME Security Essential
- F-Secure Internet Security
- G Data Total Security
- Kaspersky Standard
- McAfee Total Protection
- Microsoft Defender Antivirus
- Norton Antivirus Plus
- Panda Free Antivirus
- Quick Heal Internet Security
- TotalAV Antivirus Pro
- Total Defense Essential Antivirus
- Trend Micro Internet Security
Out of these, seven products earned the highest award level, “ADVANCED+,” for their minimal impact on system performance. These outstanding products, listed alphabetically, include Avast, AVG, ESET, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, and Panda, all of which provided users with fast and smooth computing experiences.
