AV-Comparatives release factsheet results of summer Real-World Protection Test for home-user antivirus products

Test illustrates the need for effective security products as cyber-threats continue to evolve

Independent Austrian antivirus testing lab AV-Comparatives has released a fact sheet with results of its July/August Real-World Protection Test of consumer security programs.

17 popular anti-malware apps for Microsoft Windows were put to the test: Avast Free Antivirus, AVG Free Antivirus, Avira Antivirus Pro, Bitdefender Internet Security, ESET Internet Security, F-Secure SAFE, G DATA Internet Security, K7 Total Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, McAfee Total Protection, Microsoft Windows Defender, NortonLifeLock Norton 360 Deluxe, Panda Free Antivirus, Total AV Antivirus Pro, Total Defense Essential Antivirus, Trend Micro Internet Security, VIPRE Advanced Security.

AV-Comparatives’ Real-World Test measures protection against current Internet-borne cyber-threats. These include viruses, worms, Trojans, backdoors and other types of malware (malicious programs). Tested programs can use any and all of their protection mechanisms to keep the user’s computer free from infection.

To ensure that the tested programs do not protect the system at the expense of high false-alarm rates, a false-positives test is also conducted. The fact sheet shows both the protection and false-positive rates, and can be downloaded free from the AV-Comparatives website.

The Real-World Protection Test continues in September and October, with overall results for the 4 months published in November. At the end of the year, AV-Comparatives’ Summary Report will include results of all the consumer-product tests (Real-World Protection Test, Malware Protection Test and Performance Test) conducted throughout the year, along with a user-interface review.

AV-Comparatives is an ISO-certified independent testing lab based in Innsbruck, Austria. It conducts rigorous tests of security software for home users and businesses.
