2024 Mac Certification Test Report and Review by AV-Comparatives

AV-Comparatives, the independent antivirus testing lab, has released its 2024 report on Mac certification tests and reviews of security programs for macOS. This year, eight products underwent extensive evaluation on macOS Sonoma systems.

The certified products, listed alphabetically, are: Avast Security Free for Mac, AVG Antivirus Free for Mac, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security Premium for Mac, CrowdStrike Falcon Pro for Mac, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky Premium for Mac, and Trellix Endpoint Security (HX) for Mac.

To achieve certification, each product had to exhibit high protection against prevalent Mac threats, generate no false alarms with legitimate macOS software, maintain system performance, provide real-time protection, perform essential functions reliably, and avoid confusing users with misleading alerts.

AV-Comparatives’ malware research highlights that macOS continues to be targeted by malicious programs, indicating that Mac users are not immune to cyber threats. Each product was tested against various potentially unwanted programs for macOS, with the results included in the report.

Additionally, all products were assessed for their ability to detect Windows malware, ensuring that Mac users do not inadvertently transmit malicious Windows files to others. The report includes the results of this Windows-malware detection test.

The report also provides general security advice for Mac users on maintaining system safety and offers an in-depth review of each product, covering installation, daily use, and alert mechanisms when malware is detected. These insights help users understand the usability of each product.

Andreas Clementi, CEO and founder of AV-Comparatives, stated, “Our comprehensive Mac certification test and review reaffirms the need for robust security solutions, dispels myths about Mac immunity to cyber threats, and equips users with the knowledge to keep their systems safe.”

As with all AV-Comparatives’ public reports, the 2024 Mac Antivirus Test report is available for free download on their website, www.av-comparatives.org. AV-Comparatives, based in Innsbruck, Austria, has been publicly testing computer security software since 2004. The lab is ISO 9001:2015 certified for “Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software” and holds EICAR certification as a “Trusted IT-Security Testing Lab.”
