Comprehensive Review of Android Security Apps by AV-Comparatives

AV-Comparatives, an esteemed independent security testing lab based in Innsbruck, Austria, has unveiled its 2024 report on antivirus apps for Android. This in-depth analysis reviewed six prominent security apps, including those by Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Securion, and Google’s built-in security features.

Using the latest Android 14 OS, AV-Comparatives rigorously tested these apps for malware protection, battery consumption, and anti-theft capabilities. Over 3200 recent malicious applications were used to evaluate the effectiveness of third-party antivirus solutions in protecting smartphones from Android malware.

A false-positive test, involving 500 legitimate apps, was also conducted to ensure that the security products provide robust protection without excessive false alarms. Additionally, the reliability of anti-theft features was assessed, focusing on the ability to locate, lock, and wipe data on lost or stolen devices.

To address concerns about the impact of security apps on battery life, AV-Comparatives performed a battery-drain test. This test measured the effect of each product on battery performance during common phone activities such as calling, web browsing, video watching, and emailing.

Beyond the test results, the report offers valuable security advice for Android users. It examines the built-in security features of Android 14 and their interaction with third-party security apps, providing practical tips to enhance mobile security.
